My business partner and I started a building materials company with five thousand dollars. Today it has two locations and is approaching fifty million dollars in sales since we opened. From the outside it looked like it was working.

For years it nearly broke me. I was working sixty-hour weeks, missing dinner with my family, and checking email at five in the morning because I could not sleep. Every decision came to me. Every problem landed on my desk. I had good people, and somehow they still needed me for everything. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and alone with it.

So I tried to fix it. I read the books. I hired coaches. I paid for software. Every one of them was good at what it did, and I learned something from each. What I kept running into was that they were scattered. The systems lived in books. The coaching lived with a coach. The tools lived in different apps. To get the whole picture I had to be a customer of half a dozen things, and none of them talked to each other.
